Youth With A Mission

Joy is a dynamic speaker. She has had the opportunity to speak to hundreds of venues; youth groups, women's groups, churches, non-profit organizations, businesses and governments around the globe. Her messages are timely and challenge the recipients to move out of their comfort zones, step out fearlessly for the Lord, and fulfill their purposes. In 2003, Joy won the Presidential Point of Light Award for her outreach work in the community utilizing volunteer help.

In 1995, Joy accepted the calling on her life to preach the Gospel. She was a business owner at the time and sold her business to work full time in the ministry. Her first full time ministry experience was helping to establish a small mission outreach called Restoration Urban Ministries. Restoration's focus was to reach out to the homeless and disadvantaged populations. The ministry was started by 4 couples and has grown over the past 25 years to provide transitional living for over 200 families, and much needed resources such as clothing, food, programs, vocational training, and bible studies.

Shortly after helping start Restoration Urban Ministries, she felt God calling her to working with children living in the low-income housing neighborhoods and founded an after school program called King's Club International Ministries. It began with 40 kids and grew to reach over 3,000 families weekly. Based on Pastor Bill Wilson's Metro Ministries model, the organization was a conduit for the local churches to reach those in need. King's Club's staff visited each family weekly through their Home Visitation Program. Because of this relational visitation approach to ministry, lasting relationships were formed allowing for opportunities to meet physical, spiritual, or emotional needs of those who attended the program. The organization grew to include a branches in Champaign, IL, Rockford, IL, and Egbeda, Nigeria, Africa.

For the 12 year duration of King's Club International Ministries, the organization had one employee and otherwise was completely run by volunteers. The foundation of the program included prayer, praise, faith and expecting God to show up….and He did. Because of that expectant faith miracle after miracle happened. Through weekly prayer meetings, living by faith, training leaders, and teaching them God’s word, the King's Club volunteers became amazing men and women of God. Many of the King’s Club workers have gone on to serve in full time ministry around the world and have impacted their own communities in great ways. The King's Club programing was replicated by the volunteers in numerous countries around the globe as they traveled on mission trips, some in the most remote villages in the world. In addition, King's Club was structures in such a way in order to train the next generation of young people. Once a child turned 12, they could become junior workers. These junior workers were also taught and trained in God’s word, prayer, praise, and faith. They soon became the teachers of the very programs they used to attend. They were now reaching their own neighborhoods with the gospel.

Throughout the past 20+ years of ministry, Joy has been blessed to see many of God’s miracles. She has been witness to the lame walking, cancers healed, people delivered and set free, and even a dead child raised to life by His power.

In 2000, Joy traveled to Nigeria for the first time to help a local pastor start a children’s program. She had never traveled oversees and knew that the country had just moved from a military dictatorship to a democracy. The country was in upheaval and there were many militants with machine guns in the streets. It was a scary time. She showed up fully knowing the danger, yet knowing that God had called her to go there. One evening as she was returning home from preaching, and a militant soldier stopped the car. The pastors she was with told her not to get out of the car no matter what happened. The soldier pointed the gun at her head and was screaming for her to get out of the car. She was sitting… praying, knowing this could be the end. Eventually the man left and they drove home. God’s protection and grace prevailed.

In 2013, Joy worked for a non-profit organization in East Africa. She was blessed to be able to travel into Somalia and saw first hand the famine issues. She knew that God had taken her there, and if He had led her, he would protect her.  After returning to the US, she worked with the U.S. State Department and several other non-profit organizations advising on steps to help end the famine. During the famine relief efforts she pioneered a new fundraising campaign called 'The Great Purse Exchange', where women exchanged purses. This campaign raised enough money to save over 7,000 people’s lives.

Her passion is empowering others to find their purpose and change their communities through the help of Jesus Christ. Some other examples of programs Joy has helped include:

  • Establishing an after school program in Nigeria, which feeds 800 children weekly.

  • Started a microfinance enterprise in Nigeria for the families of those children.

  • Grant writing for reconciliation programming in Rwanda. One program helped perpetrators give back once leaving prison to building homes for the victims of the genocide.

  • Coordinated visioning workshops in cities resulting in strategic plans for communities.

  • Advocacy and fundraising for the famine relief efforts in East Africa.

  • Evaluation of outreach programming to improve effectiveness .

  • Working with community leaders to build capacity and outreach training.

  • Being a voice for those in need.
